FIVE students from South Eastern Regional College (SERC) have secured coveted placements Nuffield Future Researchers organised and funded through the Nuffield Foundation and Northern Ireland based charity, Sentinus.
The students, including Paul French, 18, from Lisburn, will participate in research from home, working with experts in a virtual learning environment.
Paul is currently studying on the Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Applied Science at SERC Lisburn Campus. Paul said, “Science, specifically biology, was my favourite subject at school, mainly because I thought it was fascinating and the way my teachers conveyed the information was consistently captivating and it encouraged me to learn more by progressing to SERC to do Applied Science.”
Paul found out about the Nuffield Future Researcher Programme through his tutor. Paul’s project will involve a field study on farming practices regarding pollinators. He is currently undertaking independent research to gain more background knowledge on agri-environment schemes to promote biodiversity.
Speaking about the Nuffield Future Researcher Programme, Paul said, “I would 100% recommend it to anyone who has the opportunity to apply as thus far it has been interesting and engaging. I am gaining valuable experience which fit with my aspirations to study biology at university and progress to a career in environmental biology.”
Paul concluded, reflecting on his experience at SERC, “I would not be in the position I am today if it were not for my tutor’s encouragement and guidance. With the incredible facilities and student care provided – such as counsellors or the many mental health promotion days – SERC not only feels like a place of study, but it also feels like a safe place to become whatever you are aspiring to be.
“In conclusion, SERC gave me the push I needed to start my scientific career path and for that reason, amongst others, I can say SERC is an amazing place of study and I am glad to be a part of it.”
