SATURDAY, July 2 saw the start of the summer holidays and also the fourth week of Hagans Croft’s five-week show jumping league. The day started with the cross-poles class, where a total of four competitors achieved clear rounds – some with the help of their mums, who also needed a rosette for running and jumping over the course of 12 fences! Every competitor within this class came home with a rosette for their efforts, getting these young stars of the future off to a positive start.
The jumps moved up to the 50cm height for class 2; again it was an encouraging course of 12 fences, with fences nine to 12 now being timed against the clock. With a total of five competitors finishing on a double clear round, it was down to who did it in the fastest time. Cantering ahead of everyone, Catherine Sloan and ‘Midnight’ finished strides ahead of everyone else, completing the speed section in 45 seconds and galloping home with the red ribbon and first place. Second place went to Rose Henderson and ‘Tubster’, who had great encouragement from outside of the arena to cheer them on over the course. It certainly helped, as Rose and ‘Tubster’ finished in the second part of the course in 61.4 seconds and were delighted to be picking up the blue ribbon for all their efforts.
The 60cm class saw some bright fillers being added to the course and, with only two competitors entered, it was a battle for the red ribbon. However, for the second week in a row, the red rosette belonged to Katie Rutherford and ‘Dixie’ completing the course in 41.38 seconds, followed by Catherine Sloan and ‘Midnight’ finishing in 49.34 seconds in second place.
The 70cm class was next on the schedule and, with Melanie Talbot and her mount ‘Calypso’ in the running order, everyone knows that they have to up their game to try and compete with this speedy pair. Everyone within this class achieved double clears, however, they could not catch Melanie and ‘Calypso’, who achieved the fastest time of the day 32.44 seconds, storming home with the red rosette and first place. It was great to see Margaret Green and ‘Evee’ back out competing at this venue again. Even after their break, the pair showed that they are still one to watch – clear all the way in a time of 44.15 seconds and second place.
As the height was adjusted to 80cm and a few more fillers added, competitors walked the course looking for the best lines to each fence and striding out the double and related distances. Abbey Stevenson and her black beauty of a mare called ‘Belle’ have been doing so well in the league, getting placed within the top six each week – however this week, it was first place and the red rosette for all their efforts, double clear in a time of 41.88 seconds. Second place went to Sarah Sloan and second mount of the day ‘Beanie’ – clear all the way in a tie of 49.84 seconds. This was a good day out for Sarah and her horses, with a first and two second placings, she was delighted with their achievements!
There were no takers for the 90cm class, so the course was quickly adjusted for the 1m class, where Kaiti McCann and Leo Pele jumped for the top spot. With only one horse and rider going clear, it was red for Kaiti McCann and ‘Cookie’, therefore leaving Leo and ‘Rusty’ in second place.
Leo decided to take on the 1.10m class and it was great to get the fences up to this height, as for the past three weeks, there were no takers. Leo and ‘Rusty’ jumped an incredible round, unfortunately two poles fell to the ground, which incurred eight faults, but it was nevertheless a superb round and Leo was delighted with their performance.
