Point to point season gets underway at Necarne

THE limited Northern Region autumn sector of the point to point season got underway at Necarne, Irvinestown on Saturday. Only 46 runners went to the start on a beautiful day at the venue. The Warren Ewing trained, ‘Bold Endeavour’ partnered by Jordan Gainsford, made an impressive winning debut in the opening four-year-old maiden and the son of ‘Fame And Glory’ is a horse to note. The local winner, trained at Ballyclare, made nearly all to score going away, while the runner up was second for most of the contest.

Ewing, not surprisingly, said: “He’s likely to be sold now.”

‘Ballydam’, with Shane Fitzgerald aboard, made a winning appearance for Downpatrick trainer, Brian Hamilton and the Lonely Poets Syndicate having been bought from leading owner, Wilson Dennison – who coincidently supplied the runner up ‘Dukehill’. The winner made steady progress in the final mile to lead two from home and win snugly.

Hamilton said: “I’ll speak to the owners, but he might go to the course proper next.”

‘Fern Arable’, with Luke Murphy aboard, won the mares maiden beating the locally trained ‘Lecale Lass’ – the Denis Murphy trained winner leading three from home to score easily.

‘Winged Leader’ made a winning seasonal debut for Derrylin trainer, David Christie in the open race providing champion rider, Barry O’Neill with a winner. The Fermanagh horse was always to the fore and had ‘Minella On Line’ a length behind at the winning post.

Christie said: “I was happy with him and I’ll look for a suitable hunterchase next.”

‘High Stakes’, with James Walsh in the saddle, had the winners’ contest won when ‘Take Me West’ fell, bringing down ‘Handy Headon’ at the final fence.

The Donnchadh Doyle trained ‘ER Dancer’ provided Ross Foley with his first winner in the finale, following running out last weekend at Oldcastle.
