Poultry breeders to ease poverty in Ecuador

Ducks 14-2-19 SM Farm

By Ryan Neill

My name is Ryan Neill and I show poultry with my brother, Matthew, and my dad David under the title of M&R Neill.

We have been showing poultry for about eight years and currently have 20 different breeds of poultry.

This summer I am travelling out to Ecuador on June 29 and will return on July 28.

During my time in Ecuador I will be addressing the following issues as well as much more: housing and welfare; water security; food security; healthcare and sanitation; education and training; wildlife conservation; environmental protection and sustainable livelihoods.

This ethical journey will be nothing like anything I have ever faced before and well out of my comfort zone of the luxury we live in here in Northern Ireland.

Never mind the fact that I’m away from my family (and the poultry) for a whole month without any mobile service to contact them.

To get out to Ecuador, however, I need to fundraise money; one of the ways I will do this is a poultry box show.

The box show will be held on Saturday, March 23, from 10.30am onwards at Bleary Young Farmers’ Hall, Ballydougan Road, Bleary, Craigavon, BT63 5NU.

I would like to thank everyone who has already donated towards the event: H Beattie and Sons, Tandragee, and the other donations to the raffle prizes; Patricia Swandel for volunteering to run a trambola and also organising ‘which square the chicken poops on’, to Darren Gillespie, Peter Hamill and Eugene Mallon for offering birds to be auctioned on the day of the event; to all those who have already bought raffle tickets to win three exhibition Sussex pullets; donated money towards the event; have already sent their entries in for the box show; and last but certainty not least to the three judges who have offered their expert opinions on the birds displayed on the day.

The judges are Marc Ruymbeke, a panel A judge in Belgium who has kindly agreed to judge the soft feather.

Guy Richardson, a well known local poultry breeder who will run his eye over the waterfowl; and Gareth Ingram, a popular game breeder who will do the honours for the hard feather entries.

This promises to be a day of great enjoyment with hot food available and plenty of prizes to be won.

n There will be a raffle to win three of our own exhibition light Sussex large pullets with tickets only £5 each.

These will be available at Gosford Poultry Fair the week before or by contacting me on 07710 587776.

n The entries for the box show will be £2 per bird and can be sent to davidyvonneneill@hotmail.com

I hope to see a lot of you there to support this worthy cause, even those who don’t usually show poultry feel free to come and enjoy the day.
