Many years ago, even before I was a member of Kells and Connor Young Farmers Club, poultry judging was an important competition. This ran along with dairy, beef and pig judging.
Current patron John James Mawhinney remembers taking part in this competition.
Kells and Connor is my local club of which I am currently President, my son James is Treasurer and my wee cousin Charlotte is a junior member.
Like any organisation, the committee has made tentative steps to restart the meetings with the current Covid regulations.
Last Thursday night was the AGM and to round off the night James organised poultry stockjudging.
He took a class of Welsummer pullets, one of German Langshan pullets and a German Langshan cockerel for assessment. James gave an informative talk first on the traits for the individual breeds.
Results were:
Juniors – 1st Harry Lyttle; 2nd Sophie Bonnar; 3rd William Clack.
Seniors – 1st Houston Bonnar and Andrew White; 2nd Shannon Morton; 3rd Lucy McClintock.
It’s great to see the younger generation learning new skills, especially how to pick out a “good looking bird”.
