Rathfriland on fire as Inter-Schools’ League reaches penultimate leg

IT was another very full day of show jumping at The Meadows on Saturday for the penultimate leg of the TRI Inter-Schools’ Show Jumping League. Arenas 1 and 2 started punctually at 8.30am and continued unabated until dusk was descending, whilst arena 3 saw a later start time to reflect the start of AQA assessments.

The leader boards reflect very tight positions at the top, with everything to play for at the final in two weeks’ time (December 4).

In the Individual Primary 50cm class, dedication and excitement was the order of the day! And with Baileys Representative and Sponsor, Judy Maxwell waiting to give each competitor a rosette, prize and Baileys horse treats, the smiles that were written all over their little faces, said it all. Katie Morton from Lisnadill Primary School, and her amazing pony ‘Poppy’, finished top of the pack with a very professionally ridden double clear, nearly bang on the optimum time of 50 seconds! No mean feat for any athlete! Second on this occasion was Henry McCarthy, who finished closely behind.

In the Primary Team event, the ‘Iveagh Little Mix’ teamwere once again unstoppable and clocked up their fifth successive win by a very convincing margin over second placed, St Francis Primary School, Agherderg.

There were almost 20 starters in the 70cm Primary Individual class with a high proportion of double clears. Fastest of those was Bridge Integrated PS’s Tilley Tumilty with her pony ‘Bambi’, followed by another consistent performer, Cliodhna McEvoy and ‘Romeo’ from St Francis Primary.

Meantime, Arena 1 started as usual, with a large group of Novice teams. Six of those successfully completed on a zero score, with a total of five seconds dividing the top two. Rathfriland High School were back on form to claim maximum points, with Lurgan College in the runner up spot.

The Open team event again saw several teams ending on a clean sheet, making time the overall decider once more. The teams for Down High School were on top form, claiming two of the top three placings in this very fast competition; out in front was the Royal School Armagh, just pipping them to first place on this occasion.

Lucy Morton from Portadown College, riding ‘Ricky’, led in the Open Individual competition from a halfway stage of the class. Morton was able to hold onto the top spot, despite challenges from Sophia Bingham, who ended up in second and Kate Millar, who settled for third place.

This was not to be the last win for Lucy Morton, as the final class of the day was the Premier Individual, where the Portadown College student made her presence felt with ‘Sport’, by winning the class. ‘Monroe Star’, ridden by Gracie Bright from Antrim Grammar School, finished in second place just four-hundredths of a second behind Morton.
