SATURDAY, June 4 saw the start of Hagans Croft’s six-week show jumping league. It was lovely to see the coloured fences back in the arena, with an inviting course made up of coloured poles, fillers, ladders and planks. A range of classes were on offer from cross-poles to 1.10m, so there was something for everyone!
The day started out with the cross-pole class, which can be assisted or non-assisted whichever the rider chooses. Everyone receives a rosette regardless of whether they are clear or not, but these young stars all achieved a double clear, all unassisted and all coming home with a rosette for their efforts. Well done!
The 50cm class saw the fences raised and the second phase of fences nine to 12 were against the clock. Only two clear rounds were achieved and those were from Catherine Sloan and Emilie McCullough. Catherine and ‘Midnight’ put in the fastest time of 25.31 seconds, taking home the red ribbon; with Emilie and ‘Ralphie’, clear in a time of 31.47 seconds, taking home the blue ribbon. Hagans Croft was delighted to see a new face to compete at this venue, Emilie, doing so well.
It was then on to the 60cm class, where back poles were added to a selection of fences and fillers were added. Chloe Hamilton and ‘Archie’ wanted to try their hand at this height and achieved both first and second placings for their efforts.
As the fences got higher, clear rounds were getting harder to achieve. No clear rounds were to be seen in the 70cm class, therefore it was down to who had the fewest faults and in the fastest time. After a few months off, Chloe Scott and ‘Fergie’ were delighted to be back out competing, with one unfortunate pole hitting the ground. The pair finished with four faults, but in a time of 24.09 seconds, which was enough to bring home the red rosette. Second place went to Kiera James and ‘Sonic’, also finishing on four faults in a time of 29.22 seconds.
Once again, no clear rounds were to be seen in the 80cm class, so it was down to who had the least faults and who completed the course in the fastest time. Chloe Scott and ‘Fergie’ repeated their performance from the previous class, covering the ground in a timely fashion of 23.71 seconds, notably faster than their win in the 70cm class.
This fast time secured the win for the 80cm class and their second red ribbon of the day! Second place went to Abbie Cummins and her traditional cob ‘Cassie’, who were a joy to watch. It was just fence two, the Holmestead Saddlery planks, which tipped to the floor to incur four faults in a time of 25.25 seconds.
The largest class of the day was the 90cm class, where competitors upped their game to try and achieve that elusive double clear round. A total of three competitors finished clear, however first place was destined for who completed fences nine to twelve in the fastest time and that was Charlotte McGladery and ‘Dude’. Both horse and rider smiled their way around the course and how could they not? ‘Dude’ knows and loves his job so much that he had the fastest time of the day 20.24 seconds – very deserving of the red rosette! It was blue for Sara Gray and ‘Keizer’ in a time of 21.93 seconds. This pair are hot off their win in Hagans Croft’s Jump Mix league, so organisers have high hopes for them as they take part in the show jumping league.
As there were no entries for the 1m or 1.10m classes, the day finished early but on a definite high.
