A HIGH PLI bull from the noted Danna family at Relough topped Holstein NI’s 28th annual spring show and sale, hosted by Taaffe Auctions at Dungannon Farmers’ Mart.
The December 2016 Relough Danship PLI £625 came under the hammer of auctioneer Michael Taaffe at 6,100gns, selling to Robert Anderson from Dungannon. Sired by Sandy Valley Penmanship ET, he is bred from the VG 2yr Relough MVP Danna 3 ET – the UK’s number six PLI cow £571 who produced 10,029kgs at 6.02 per cent butterfat and 3.77 per cent protein in her first 305-day lactation. He is backed by ten generations of VG and EX dams, and secured the honourable mention ribbons at the pre-sale show sponsored by Danske Bank.
Second highest bid of the day was 5,100gns, also went to Ronald McLean, and sons Malcolm and Barry, for the supreme champion Relough Daneiro PLI £574. Sired by KNS Brasileiro ET, this November 2016 bull is backed by 10 generations of VG and EX dams. He is bred from Relough Numero Danna 2 ET EX91 who averaged 10,551kgs at 4.51 per cent butterfat and 3.32 per cent protein in three 305-day lactations. Buyer was John Caldwell from Beragh near Omagh.
Scottish judge Matthew Armour awarded the reserve championship to Prehen Fidel PLI £553 bred by Robbie and Stuart Smith, Londonderry. Sired by Seagull Bay MJ Solaris ET, he is out of Prehen Shottle Froukje EX93-3E who averaged 11,205kgs at 4.09 per cent butterfat and 3.32 per cent protein in four 305-day lactations. Backed by 10 generations of VG and EX dams, he attracted a bid of 4,600gns from Messrs R and V Draffin, Kircassock Farm, Lurgan.
Next best at 4,000gns was the McLean family’s first prize winner Relough Dancane ET PLI £595. Born in December 2016, he is by Bacon Hill Hurricane ET, and is out of the VG87-2yr Relough Pepper Danna 4 ET. Buyer was David Hemphill from Drumquin.
The December 2016 born Prehen Faring PLI £533 sold at 3,500gns for Robbie and Stuart Smith. This fourth placed entry is a son of Apina Nadal, and is bred from Prehen Mascol Froukje ET EX92 LP60 who produced 11,498kgs at 3.85 per cent butterfat and 3.30 per cent protein in her sixth lactation. Highest bidder was Alan Liggett from Clogher.
Following close behind at 3,400gns was the second prize winner Ards Daly PLI £268 from Harry Patton and Sons, Newtownards. Born in December 2016, he is by Ladys Manor RD Grafeeti ET, and is out of Ards Baxter Debbie Joy ET EX91. Buyer was Sean O’Brien from Poyntzpass.
David and Alan Wallace, Antrim, paid out 3,350gns to secure the third prize winner Hilltara Aiden ET PLI £352 from Sam and John McCormick’s Bangor-based herd. This one is by Seagull Bay Silver ET, and is out of Hilltara Dundee Apple ET EX94-2E. He is backed by eight generations of EX dams.
The January 2017 Ards Magnet sold at 3,200gns for the Patton family. Sired by Ladys Manor RD Grafeeti ET, his dam is Ards Defender Missy VG87 2yr. Buyer was John O’Brien from Jerrettspass.
Auctioneer Michael Taaffe con-firmed an 80 per cent clearance, with 24 lots selling to level at £2,636 – representing an increase of £296 on this time last year when 25 bulls averaged £2,340.
