MY name is Libby Mooney and I am from Rathmullan, County Donegal. I am a student on the Level 2 Technical Certificate in Equine Care at Enniskillen campus, CAFRE.
I started riding when I was just four years old and after a few years I was introduced to pony racing. After competing in a few races, I was hooked and I instantly knew that this is the road I would like to go down. My father has a few thoroughbreds and I often had the opportunity to go racing and this is where my love for horses developed.
The Enniskillen Campus Racing Yard is one of the things that attracted me to CAFRE. I currently ride out each morning and really enjoy riding the racehorses and in particular a horse called Jet.
I have loved every minute of my time at CAFRE Enniskillen so far. I really enjoy all the different modules from Working in the Equine Industry to Riding and Exercising Horses. I have just completed my British Horse Society Ride Safe Award at CAFRE and in future I will complete a number of British Horse Society exams together with trying to get my Qualified Rider’s Permit.
The opportunities I have had at CAFRE are unbelievable. I had the opportunity to meet and talk to countless professionals from the industry at our recent careers day. For me this is invaluable as it helps me to build links within the industry, which I feel is so very important for my future career.
This year has been slightly different as we had to complete some of our classes online. Our lecturers really do try to make class interesting and just a few months ago we could bring our pets to class virtually! I enjoy online learning, however I really miss racehorse Jet and equitation horse Tucker.
I have decided that I want to continue my studies at CAFRE Enniskillen and I have applied for the Foundation Degree in Equine Management. This is a two year programme validated by Ulster University.
This course appeals to me as it has not only theory but a practical element as well.
