AGRI technology company Devenish has been named the overall Safe Site Award winner at the Fork Lift Truck Association (FLTA) UK Awards for Excellence. The Belfast-headquartered agri technology company was recognised for its commitment to improving health and safety across the five sites where its animal nutrition products are manufactured and packed in Northern Ireland and England.
The FLTA Awards encourage and reward examples of excellence throughout the forklift truck industry and beyond.
Following a company-wide evaluation and review into its health and safety programme, Devenish designed and launched a strategy aimed at overhauling its approach to site safety last year. To date, this ‘Back to Basics’ programme has included employee training presentations and workshops, live ‘do and don’t’ demonstrations, pre and post-shift checks and regular safety assessment walks. The company has made significant investment into its facilities including internal floor lighting, automatic loading safety systems and floor scrubbing equipment. Forklift trucks were removed from certain areas within its sites and replaced with innovative pedestrian stackers, which provide greater visibility for drivers and reduce the risk of incidents in tight spaces.
Speaking about the award, Kieran McPolin, Head of Operations, Devenish said: “The health and safety of our people at Devenish is so extremely important and within the last 18 months we made a concentrated effort to improving our standards to the very best of our ability. This award from the FLTA is recognition of the hard work and commitment of everyone who has helped adopt and deliver our strategy, aimed at enhancing health and safety throughout Devenish’s operations.
“We are proud to have received this UK-wide recognition and its acts as further impetus to focus on continually assessing and improving our operations so we remain a safe place to work,” Mr McPolin said.
