SHENNA Young (IMSc EEBW NVAP) from Warrenpoint was named Therapist of the Year at a first of its kind event held in the Titanic Quarter Belfast on Saturday, June 25. The Equine Awards NI was a night to celebrate the best in the equestrian sector and finalists came from all over the country.
Shenna, who emanates from Warrenpoint and presently resides in Preston in England, said: “I’m absolutely delighted and honoured to be the first winner of this award. I would like to thank all my family, friends and clients for their nominations and the lovely comments they made about me. It has made all my hard work so worthwhile.”
Shenna, who is a past pupil of St Mark’s High school in Warrenpoint and Our Lady’s Grammar school in Newry, spent four years studying for an Integrated Masters in Veterinary physiotherapy in Writtle University College in England. She then came home to Northern Ireland two years ago and established her own business and has since built up a great client base here. She moved to the North West of England last year to work with the Horse and Pony Protection Association, whilst establishing her business over there at the same time. She frequents her NI clients on a regular basis and is always keen for new business.
At the awards, Shenna wanted to reach out and let it be known of her struggles through school, as it was only in her A-level year at Our Lady’s Grammar school that she was diagnosed with dyslexia.
She said: “I just want to let everyone know that dyslexia doesn’t have to stop you reaching your goals. There is so much support out there if you ask for it and, if you have the passion and drive as I did for animals and their welfare, you can accomplish anything and I’m not finished yet! This year, I plan to attend veterinary college. There are always ways and means to achieve your dream.”
