DERMOT, Gareth and Marc Small from Kilkeel brought a team of three cattle to the Commercial Cattle NI 14th Annual Show and it was a 1-2-3 for the Small team.
Under judge Lin Pidsley it was their black Limousin sired heifer which walked away with the Overall Champion of Show. This heifer has been unstoppable at every show she has entered, winning Balmoral back in May and the Royal Highland in June, so who knows where she will turn up next.
The Smalls didn’t just walk away with the Overall Champion, their Charolais-sired heifer nipped at their champion’s heels all day where she took Reserve Female Champion and then Reserve Overall Champion. Not to be out-done by the heifers the dream team from Kilkeel stormed the steer classes with another Limousin-sired animal. At the end of the day they had claimed Overall, Reserve Champion and Male Champion.
Reserve Male Champion was Jack Smyth from Newtownstewart with his black Limousin sired steer.
The Calf Champion of 2018 was shown by Alan Veitch from Lisbellaw County Fermanagh. This Charolais-sired heifer calf stood first in the under 380kg heifer calf class then went on to win the Championship. Reserve to Alan’s calf was showman Robert Miller with his black heifer which stood second to the Veitch’s calf in the class.
In the Linden Foods Butcher Animal class it was Jack Smyth with his Limousin heifer who took the honours while in reserve it was John Killen with another Limousin heifer.
The winner of the popular Breeding Heifer Championship was Gallagher Bros with their blue grey Limousin-sired heifer which caught the eye of judge Louise Allan and in reserve spot it was another Limousin heifer from Robert Millar.
Both judges were very impressed with the standard of cattle that they judged and described them as brought out to perfection.

The Committee of the Commercial NI would like to thank all the sponsors no matter how big or small they are, without them the show could not have been held; also to the team of helpers that assisted with the setting up and the tidy up that evening; also thanks to Dungannon Farmers’ Market for the use of its premises.
The next event will be the annual dinner dance and prize giving which will take place at the start of next year. The club’s growing “Young Stars” event will be in Dungannon Farmers’ Market again in February 2019 (final date to be decided).
