Sophie and ‘Little Me’ jump into red ribbons at Hagans Croft

SATURDAY, August 28 saw the first week of Hagans Croft’s five-week show jumping league. It was lovely to see the coloured fences back in the arena, with an inviting course made up of coloured poles, fillers, ladders and planks. A range of classes were on offer from cross-poles to 1.10m, so there was something for everyone.

The day started out with the cross-pole class, which can be assisted or non-assisted, whichever the rider chooses. Even though there were only two clear rounds from Lily Henderson and Rachel Price, everyone who competed in this class went home with a rosette.

The 50cm class saw the fences raised to parallels and the second phase of fences, nine to 12, were timed against the clock. Again only two clear rounds were achieved and those were from Maisie Elliott and Rachel Price. Maisie and ‘Moonlight’ put in the fastest time of 24.9 seconds, taking home the red ribbon, while Rachel jumped clear in a time of 37 seconds taking home the blue ribbon.

It was then on to the 60cm class, where back poles were added to a selection of fences and fillers were added. The competition certainly started to hot up, with a total of 10 competitors taking on the challenge, however, with a few unfortunate poles landing on the ground, it meant that some competitors incurred four faults, even though their speed time was great. Only the clear rounds were in with a chance of top 4 ribbons.

On their first time competing at this venue, Eva Wright and ‘Cappa Rose’ certainly made their mark, with a double clear in a fast time of 19.97 seconds, they stormed home with the red ribbon. Hot on Eva’s heels was Alex Helmsley and ‘Vinnie’ with another speedy time of 22.22 seconds and clear all the way to land them the second place ribbon.

With a total of seven clear rounds in the 70cm class, it was down to who completed fences nine to 12 in the fastest time. Jack Cowan and ‘Edentrillick Honey Bee’ executed all the tight and sneaky turns with ease, keeping all fences intact to achieve the fastest time of the day overall – 17.13 seconds! They certainly deserved the red rosette. Victoria White McCurdy did it for the horses on her mount ‘Temple Bui’, finishing in a time of 19.13 seconds and claiming second place.

The largest class of the day was the 80cm class, where once again there were a total of seven clear rounds. It just goes to show the saying ‘good things come in small packages’ is true, as Sophie Sloan and ‘Little Me’ soared over the course of 12 fences in a time of 18.12 seconds to take home the red ribbon. They certainly were delighted with their efforts on the day. Again it was blue for Victoria White McCurdy and ‘Temple Bui’, who improved on their time from the previous class, finishing second in 18.87 seconds.

Nothing could stop Sarah Cowan and ‘Pandora D’ in the 90cm class – the pair achieved the only clear round of the class and jumped the timed section of the course in under 20 seconds, 19.69 seconds to be exact. They were delighted to be awarded the red ribbon. Kathryn McCaughan and her colourful mare ‘Monsoon’ had an unfortunate one pole down at fence seven, along with three other competitors also finishing with four faults, however Kathryn completed the speed section of the course in the fastest time, which meant not all was lost and the pair came home with a lovely blue ribbon.

The penultimate class of the day was the 1m class and it was great to see Lauren Madine back competing at this venue again and, both her and ‘Moonshine Melody’, have certainly been working hard since organisers last saw them. Keeping all the course intact and finishing in a time of 20.9 seconds, it was first place for the pair both in this class and in the 1.10m class. Well done to them, it is great to see this partnership doing so well together.

Thank you to everyone who supported the first leg of this five-week league, Hagans Croft hopes to see you all again next week. Thanks are extended to all the stewards, who make the event run so smoothly. The league continues until Saturday, September 25 – this event is pre-entry only, with entries closing each Thursday at 8pm prior to Saturday’s event. Times are posted online late Thursday evening.

To qualify for the final in week five, each horse/ pony and rider combination must compete in three out of the five weeks and within the same show jumping class. Competitors must be present at the final to be eligible for league placings. Scoring is based on a points system and details of league scores can be found on Hagans Croft’s website or facebook page. Rosettes are awarded to the first six placings each week and within the overall league placings. Everyone is welcome to compete at the final on September 25, with a separate prizegiving held for those competing on the day and those competing within the league.
