THREE action-packed days of hot competition were enjoyed at Portmore from August 3 to 5. Title sponsors for the show once again were Bluegrass Horse Feeds, with Horse First sponsoring the Top Placed Amateur prize on Saturday afternoon. Competitors travelled from far and wide to get their hands on their share of the prize money on offer, giving spectators plenty of hot competition to enjoy over the three days. Classes also combined a new feature with Top Amateur, Top Placed Five-year-old and Top placed Six and Seven-year-olds also being recognised. Each title had £100 to reward efforts in performing to the best of their ability on the day.
Each of the three days began with a 90cm, then 1m class with prize money being divided amongst all clears.
Friday’s schedule included a Top Placed Five-year-old award in the 1.20m class and Angela Percy’s ‘Diamante De La Mer’ claimed the £100 for this accolade.
Top Placed Six and Seven-year-old prizes were awarded in the 1.30m class, which was therefore a very busy class. Pamela Posnett’s ‘Queen of Clubs’, ridden by Suzanne Posnett won the 1.30m Grand Prix overall, with David Finlay’s ‘Fyfin Charlie’ ridden by Jonathan Smyth finishing in second place and winning Top Placed Seven-year-old. Pamela Posnett’s ‘Foseula’ finished in third, giving Suzanne two horses in the top three. Noletta Smyth’s ‘Mulvin Lights Out’ stopped the clock in fourth place and won Top Placed Six-year-old, giving Jonathan Smyth two placings in the top four!
The winner of Saturday’s 1.10m and also a competitive amateur, Grace Hurrell, meant that she not only won the hotly contested Horse First sponsored hamper for Top Placed Amateur, but also the 1.10m first place prize money! Second place went to Aedi McCaughey’s ‘Emilion’, ridden by Tom Hearn, with another keen amateur, Joe Harris and ‘Coppindell Concorde’ hot on their heels.
The 1.20m class was won by Michaela Murphy’s ‘McKinley’, with Pat McCaughey’s ‘Taplagh Lady’, ridden by Ryan O’Neill second in line. The 1.30m class was won by Gabriel Tunney riding his own ‘Candy Man’, with Michaela Murphy and ‘McKinley’ in super form and in the ribbons again with second placed rosette this time.
Sunday morning brought sunshine and familiar faces back to Portmore in strength and, if you didn’t get a clear round, at least you went home with a tan! Clear rounds in the 90cm and 1m classes are shown below.
The 1.10m class was won by Rachel McKimmon on Robert Moore’s ‘Altaskin Buddy’, with Sarah Burns and ‘Georgies Star’ having to settle for second.
The 1.20m August Spectacular Speed class set the cat amongst the pigeons, with large entries and a number of them being caught out by the tempting turns and nature of the one-round speed competition. Declan McParland riding John Downey’s ‘Away Again’ were victorious, with Gary Jackson’s ‘Merrymaker’ ridden by Barry McCormack in second. Jess Finnegan’s ‘Tommy Girl’, ridden by Emma Jackson, finished in third.
The feature class of the weekend was next and, following her form from Friday’s win, Suzanne Posnett took the win once again. This time winning on Pamela Posnett’s ‘Foseula’, with ‘Queen of Clubs’ taking third and reversing their Friday Grand Prix placings! Jonathan Smyth featured three times in this line up, with a second on Richard J W Smyth’s ‘Charlton Clio’, fifth on Roy Craig’s ‘Beltrim Brother Ava’ and sixth on Clive Cathers’s ‘Ping Ball’. Angela Percy finished fourth on Hilary Furlonger’s ‘Five Star Quality’.
Portmore Equestrian Centre would like to express their thanks to the large numbers of competitors who supported the centre on such a busy weekend in the equestrian calendar. Best of luck to all those competing in Dublin Horse Show this week and thanks to the team and everyone behind the scenes who went above and beyond to ensure the success of the weekend’s show, including the sponsors Bluegrass and Horse First.
