Suffolks reach 4100gns at Ballymena

SUFFOLKS were in high de-mand at the recent Ballymena sale organised by the Suffolk Sheep Society NI Branch, generously sponsored by Ani-max Veterinary Technology.

Commercial breeders from near and far were at the ringside looking to source Suffolk rams for the forthcoming breeding season.

Sale prices peaked at 4100gns when Crewelands flock owner Stephen Sufferin from Maghera topped the sale with his Solwaybank Champion bred ram which, after frenzied bidding, was knocked down in a three-way split to fellow Suffolk breeders Rodney Blair, John McKay and Stephen Toye.

Jack Smyth of the Bessiebell flock, County Tyrone, had a successful evening when four of his lambs took top prices at the sale.

Smyth’s Theviews V6 bred ram went on to sell to N Walsh, Rathfriland, for 2800gns. His other three sold for 2450gns to W Crawford, Newtownstewart, 1900gns sold to W Rankin, Drumquin, and 1800gns to S Illingworth, Drumfrieshire.

Shearlings were also in strong demand when Elizabeth and James Gould’s Carrowmoney Bandit sired shearling topped at 1350gns, selling to S Hunter, Bushmills.

The sale had an 85 per cent clearance. Ram lambs averaged £714. Shearlings averaged £789.
