THE locally bred, ‘Best Solution’ landed his second Group 1 victory for Godolphin, when claiming the most prestigious race run in Germany – the Longines Grosser Preis Von Baden on Sunday.
Godolphin’s principal trainer, Saeed Bin Suroor has hailed ‘Best Solution’, bred by the McCracken brothers from Dromore, in his top three horses for the remainder of the season, along with ‘Benbatl’ and ‘Thunder Snow’ – the latter winner of the $10 million Dubai World Cup.
While another Godolphin trainer, Charlie Appleby claimed the Epsom Derby with Masar Bin Suroor has very high profile targets for the Ulster bred horse with the Group 1 Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup on the agenda.
The major race at Baden Baden developed into a sprint in the closing stages, but Banbridge jockey, Pat Cosgrave again was able to enjoy an all-County Down success on ‘Best Solution’.
Martin McCracken, a well-known farrier, and his brother Craig are unlikely to be able to travel to Australia to see their star contest the two major races, including the race that stops a nation – the Melbourne Cup – as they are currently preparing this year’s batch of foals for the forthcoming bloodstock sales.
Saeed Bin Suroor said post-race: “I really have only three good horses in my stable – ‘Thunder Snow’, ‘Benbatl’ and ‘Best Solution’ – the rest are just horses,” he said. adding: “These three are my leaders and they’ve run well for me in Dubai, in Europe and will hopefully do so in America and Australia as well.”
It is several decades since the province produced Group 1 winners on the level and the County Down brothers are now in pole position for top honours at the end of year Awards events, with their son of ‘Kodiac’ now having won almost three-quarters of a million pounds.
