SUMMER is the best time to relax, have fun and enjoy lots of activities with your horse or pony. Whether or not you are a happy hacker or aiming to be the next top eventer, there are risks involved with all of these activities, so you need to be mindful of this, as well as having fun. The good news is that, with careful planning, these risks can be minimised and at Old Mill Saddlery we have some fantastic tips to help you along the way.
For those of you who love nothing more than a long hack up a country road or to your local forest, then here are some ideas you may want to take on board:
1) Always let somebody know where you are, who you are with and how long you plan to be away;
2) Carry a mobile phone that is fully charged in case of emergencies;
3) Check your tack thoroughly before you leave to ensure it is safe and secure;
4) Wear Hi Viz or Reflective clothing even in the day time, so that you are more noticeable to both drivers and pedestrians.
At Old Mill Saddlery, we stock the Equi-Flector range of products, such as Bridle Bands, Hat Bands, Reversible Waistcoats, Hat Covers and Exercise Sheets, so you can be matchy-matchy with your horse and be safe and seen as well! If you plan on a longer trip in the saddle, then you may want to invest in a Saddle Pannier to carry essentials, such as a drink, first aid kit, treats, your phone and maybe something for lunch!
If you are feeling a little bit more adventurous and fancy some show jumping or cross-country this summer, then we have a wide range of products to help keep you safe. We stock a variety of safety stirrups, such as Acavallo Alupro, Safe-On and Freejump. These all have unique safety features and come in a selection of colours. We also stock some of these in junior sizes as well.
When going cross-country, it will be compulsory at most venues to wear a skull cap and a body protector. One of our best-selling skull caps at the moment is the Charles Owen MS1 Pro Jockey Skull, which is designed with an ABS shell featuring MIPS technology and has a comfortable padded harness. It is Kitemarked to VG1 01-040 2014-12 and PAS015, so should be suitable for competing at most events as well.
A lightweight body protector will be cooler in the summer heat and both the Racesafe ProVent 3.0 and the Airowear Wave are among the lightest on the market. They are both segmented, so are very flexible and have a Beta Level 3 Safety Standard, so provide the highest level of protection available.
