Sun comes out for Hagans Croft Working Hunter League

AFTER a wet week, the sun came out for the third week of the Working Hunter league and NIF qualifiers at Hagans Croft on Saturday, October 30. The rustic course was dressed for the Hallowe’en season, with some pumpkins making an appearance at some of the fences. The course was built by Working Hunter specialist Toni Donnelly and competitors and their horses rode the track with confidence and boldness, with lots of clear rounds to be seen over the course of the day.

A special mention must go to Megan Houston and ‘Western Ocala’, who caught the judge’s eye within the horse championship show to be awarded the title of Horse Champion on the day. What a great achievement for this new partnership! Congratulations also to Nicky Nesbitt and ‘Carrickview Saratoga’ for achieving Horse Reserve Champion on the day. Another great achievement, as this was Nicky’s first time competing at Hagans Croft, therefore the pair really made their mark on this venue.

The afternoon session saw the turn of the ponies. Even though there were few pony entries, the calibre of pony and rider was high, so judge David Kirkpatrick had a few hard decisions to make when it came to the pony championship.

However, there were two competitors that stood out and they were Kitty Cullen on ‘Coppenagh Spring Sparrow’, who were awarded Pony Champion and Pradyumnha Dhumal on ‘Roscon Marcelo’, who was awarded Reserve Champion Pony. Congratulations to these two friends, who had a great day out competing on their four-legged friends.

Thank you to everyone who supported the third leg of this five-week league. Hagans Croft hopes to see everyone again this Saturday, November 6. Thanks are extended to the judge, David Kirkpatrick; scribe and steward, Katie, who made the event run so smoothly.

The league continues until Saturday, November 13; this event is pre-entry only, with entries closing each Thursday at 8pm prior to Saturday’s event. Times are posted online late on Thursday evening. To qualify for the final in week five, each horse/ pony and rider combination must compete in three out of the five weeks and within the same Working Hunter class. Competitors must be present at the final to be eligible for league placings.

Scoring is based on a points system and details of league scores can be found on Hagans Croft’s website or facebook page. Rosettes are awarded to the first six placings each week and within the overall league placings. Everyone is welcome to compete at the final on November 13, with a separate prize giving held for those competing on the day and those competing within the league. This league is very kindly sponsored by Comfort Gut.

All photography is available to purchase from Black Horse Photography NI.

Entries are taken via Hagans Croft’s website: or download the Hagans Croft App.
