Sunflowers are standing tall for student Joanna

It’s all about looking up! Toffee, the 12 year old collie/husky, congratulating Joanna Mullan, Drumrane Road, Largy, Limavady, on the successful growing of her sunflowers which currently top nine feet tall and are still pushing upwards.

Joanna, daughter of noted dairy farmers Wesley and Janice Mullan, is about to start her finals year in agricultural studies at Greenmount Agricultural College.

She grew a few sunflowers last year but they didn’t get just so tall. This year she had another go, starting off in pots just over two months ago, and then transferring her flowers to their present location. She talks to them every day and makes sure that they get the best of shelter, sun and nutrition – no problem at their location on a dairy farm, and makes regular use of her measuring tape!
