A day of sunshine and showers greeted schools’ pupils from all over Northern Ireland for the 2022 running of the May Day Inter-Schools’ Show Jumping at the Meadows on Saturday, April 30.
Commencing the day was the Primary 50cm Individual class. 11 of the youngest competitors turned out, with the same adrenaline rush as the Grand Prix riders and they certainly provided just as much excitement! On this occasion, Taylor Lee Doyle with ‘Jack-a- Roo’ finishing closest to the optimum time to take the red rosette.
Year after year, the performance of these young riders never fails to impress the judges – this is very evident in the Primary Team competition, where their ringcraft and professionalism belies their tender years. In this section, it was the ‘Wee Rascals’ who took the win on this occasion, ahead of the Iveagh Friends.
A very happy young rider, Pippa Moore, took the honours in the Primary 70cm Individual class on her super little pony ‘Seapatrick Make A Move’. They finished just ahead of Sarah Pike and ‘Fudge’.
Doing the double on the day was Una McClelland from St Catherine’s College, Armagh, who took first place in both the Secondary Individual 75cm and Novice 85cm classes.
The biggest class to take place at the Meadows was the Open Individual class. Action was fast and furious as 31 combinations took part, with only fractions of a second dividing many of the top placings. However, the swift turns of Royal School Armagh’s Peter Morton and ‘Bobo Bear’ were rewarded with the top spot. Second place on this occasion went to Rosa McIlhatton with ‘Roughan Boy’ from St Patrick’s Academy, Dungannon.
Gracie Bright gave a great account of herself, as she and the very accomplished ‘Monroe Star’ were fastest around the course in the Open class, forcing Ellie Simms and ‘Carnone Diamond Beach’ to settle for second place.
Once again, the organisers would like to thank all Chefs d’equipe and pupils for their support and co-operation.
Thanks too, to all judges, stewards, call up, arena party, and office staff, who work long hours to make this such a successful event.
