ON a beautiful Saturday, August 6 in the Comber countryside, Ardnacashel Equestrian hosted their annual Summer Show.
Six rings were on the go during the day. Ring 1 hosted Working Hunter Horses, judged by Mr Brian Murphy with Miss Amanda Telford as ride judge; Ring 2 hosted Show Horses, judged by Mr O Kerr with Mrs Camilla Galloway as ride judge; Ring 3 saw Working Hunter Ponies, judged by Mr Tony Bell; Ring 4 saw Show Ponies, judged by Mrs J Summerville; Ring 5 hosted In Hand classes, judged by Mr E Summerville and, finally, Ring 6 hosted Show Jumping, under the watchful eye of Miss Alice Salters.
Classes from Tiny Tots Lead Rein featuring the most junior riders on the cutest ponies to Large Hunter Ridden, cross-poles to 1.20m show jumping and too many working hunter classes for ponies and horses to mention, were all in full flow for the full day.
The Working Hunter Horse ring was the first ring to start the day and wins in this ring included Adele Huddleston on ‘Obey’ in the first class of the day, 60cm. Moving on to 70cm and Rachel Redmond secured a ticket to Northern Ireland Festival with a win on ‘Baltracey Hero’. In the three 80cm classes, there were wins for Jim McShane on ‘Denzil’ in the Performance; Angela McIlroy on ‘Glencorran Lad’ in the Amateur and Chloe Rooney with ‘Paddington’ took the qualifying ticket for NIF in the qualifier class.
Rory Lavery with ‘Tullaher Milo’ took the red ribbon in the 90cm NIF qualifier; Emma Jackson on ‘Mr Quality Cruise’ in the 1m and, the final class in the Working Hunter ring, the 1.10m was won by Sadie McMahon with ‘Silian Coevers’.
Moving into the Horse Showing Ring, the first class of the day was the Four-year-old Show Horse and was won by local rider Kerry Finlay with ‘Ladies Choice’. The next class in this ring, the Amateur Show Horse was won by Andrea Newell with ‘Bruno Mars’. One of the largest classes of the day, the Newcomers Show Horse, a class for riders and horses who have not been placed in County Level Shows, gave Andrea Newell her second win of the morning, again with ‘Bruno Mars’. Further wins in this ring came from Chloe Rooney with ‘Paddington’ in the Small Hunter; Megan Norton and ‘Vazzy’ in Small Riding Horse – the combination who also won Racehorse to Riding Horse.
The Pony Working Hunter ring, which is always a favourite for spectators who love the beautifully turned out rider and pony combinations, started with the highly popular cross-poles class, which was won by Zac Bradley on ‘Nico’. With several NIF qualifying classes on the schedule in this ring, tickets for next year’s show went to Poppy Smith with ‘Haywards Lasting Impression’ in the 70cm and Charlotte Keers with ‘Western Ocala’ in the 1m class. Charlotte and ‘Western Ocala’ then went straight into the Working Hunter Pony championship and won the coveted sash.
Show Ponies, always the busiest ring of any of Ardnacashel’s shows, didn’t disappoint. With very large entries across the schedule, the judge Mrs J Summerville, certainly had her work cut out. In the first section of the day, the classes for the smallest ponies and riders, there were wins for Charlotte Morton with ‘Menai Mon Felicia’, Ella Latto and ‘Gryngallt Pizzicato’, Max Nixon and ‘Simple Simon’ and Carolie Brolly with ‘Yrenfys Llwynog’.
This ring then moved on to Native pony classes and, again with large entries, it was super to see local riders taking the first place rosettes, with wins from Lucy Donnan on ‘Romeo’ in the Open Ridden Connemara; Brooke Rice with ‘Stanray Luigi’ in the Novice Small Breed M&M and Ryan Anderson with ‘Brackenbank Black Prince’ in the Novice Large Breed M&M. Lucy Donnan on ‘Romeo’ then went on to take Champion of the Native classes.
