PORTMORE Equestrian Centre, Aghalee, held their last SJI show of 2022 in the Bluegrass indoor arena and what a great way it was to finish, with a super weekend of jumping at the Winter Championship Show! The action kicked off on Friday; Hannah Blakely, riding for Lougherne Stud, was in great form, taking the win in the 1.10m class on ‘Lougherne Contessa’ and also in the 1.30m with ‘Lougherne Caravaggio’.
Saturday saw some great jumping again. In the 1.20m Accumulator, Tyrone Flanagan on Ruairi Holmes’ ‘Coloo Colin’ jumped a fast clear, leaving the joker fence standing to take the top place, just ahead of Olivia Roulston on Samantha Dale’s ‘Roundthorn Hercules’. The last class on the Saturday was the 1.30m Mini Grand Prix, with 53 starters, eight clears went into the jump off, but it was Angela Waras on Hugh Ward’s ‘Diamant De la Mer’ that tipped the winning post with a very fast clear.
The final day of the show was for the championship classes. Ruth Will on Margaret Horan’s ‘Burst of Classe’ took the 1m Champion title; Sarah Kinnear on her own ‘Elf Queen’ took the 1.10m Champion title and Savannah Marshall on Harry Marshall’s five-year-old ‘Lemonade’ took the 1.20m Champion title.
The final class of the weekend was the 1.35 Grand Prix. 48 starters came forward to take on the Rafael Suarez designed track, taking 16 into the jump off. As each round kept getting faster to get a bit if the £2,000 prize fund on offer, Junior rider Robert Russell jumped two great clears to take both his horses, ‘Ballyrobin Nimmerdor’ and ‘Loberon’ into the jump off and again pulled out all the stops to jump two very fast rounds to take the two top spots and held the lead until Kenneth Graham on his own ‘Beir Bua’ jumped a very fast round and took just a second off Robert’s time to take the winner’s title.
