DONAGHADEE Harbour was the venue for the incredibly exciting Team Relay Race on Saturday, August 4. The event was part of the Donaghadee Festival and was very generously sponsored by local Restaurant and Bar, Pier 36.

Gransha Equestrian Centre provided the jumps and, as the tide went out, the efficient squad built up the course of eight fences.

The teams, each consisting of four riders, paraded onto the beach when the course was ready and had a brief look around before getting under starters orders.

Christopher Pooler, commentator for the day, kept the teams in order and the spectators up to speed with the split times and faults for each rider, creating a lively atmosphere.

For the second year in a row, The Nat Jobs, led by local farrier Nat Wilton and supported by Phoebe Beaumont, Cerys Howell and Alex Ryan, had the fastest time of the day without any mishaps.

Second fastest, despite having a few run outs at the skinny fence, were the Hilltop Hallians – Colin Bush, Nicky Calvert, Frances Adgey and Emma Wallace.

In third place, led by Harrison Blair were ‘Harrison’s Angels’ – Lauren Belton McGlennon, Sophie Morrow and Lauren Taylor.

In fourth place this year, were 2016 winners, Magill’s Mashers – Ann and Alice Magill, Louise Williams and Natasha Flood.

The Hilltop Hooligans finished fifth and received the ‘Best Turned Out’ prize, sponsored by Nash’s Equestrian. Nathan Nash presented prizes to Judith Reid, Rachel Prentice, Jill Banford and Heather McMillan.

Only Fools on Horses – Jenny Nixon, Rachel Lindsay, Hannah Patterson and Katie Robinson – received the reserve prize for the ‘Best Turned Out’.

The event concluded with a gallop, including all the teams, around the beach and harbour creating a fantastic spectacle for the spectators.

A little bonus this year was the attendance of Leo Larkin from Flat Out Media, who videoed the event. So, if you want to have a glimpse at the fun, search out his website!
