On February 22 it was cold, wet and windy outside Templepatrick Presbyterian Church Hall – but the atmosphere inside was warm and welcoming.
Every institute in the Knockagh area had put forward its best general knowledge experts to vie for the trophy awarded annually to the winning Quiz Team.
There was a buzz of anticipation as Elizabeth Gray, Area President, welcomed everyone and introduced Ken Henderson, who was to conduct the quiz.
Rules for the proceedings were explained and members of the enthusiastic audience were encouraged to take part by completing their own individual sheets and the competition got underway.
Sixty questions were put to the teams, covering a wide range of topics such as cockney slang, history, geography, fashion and the anatomy of a bird.
In the end it was a closely fought battle of minds and Templepatrick, represented by Hilary Beckett, Carol Borland and Roberta Stinson, won by a two-point margin over Ben Madigan, closely followed by Carnmoney.
The winning team will represent Knockagh at the Federation final to be held in Carnmoney Presbyterian Church Hall on Wednesday, May 27.
The audience prize went to Diane Thompson, the Area Executive Member.
The bowls competition followed a short interval for refreshments and this was in a round-robin format.
Some great bowling was enjoyed but Ruby Erwin from Templepatrick saw off all the other contestants to claim first prize.
She will represent Knockagh at the Federation final in a few weeks time. The runner-up was Dorothy Coulter from Muckamore.
The next event, open to everyone – not just WI members – will be the Area Spring Meeting in the same Templepatrick venue on April 29 at 7.30pm.
It will be well worth the admission cost of £4 to hear Clive Scoular talking about Constance Markievicz: Fiery Firebrand, and Alice Milligan: Plucky Poetess.
