THE local business and farming community, along with the horse racing fraternity, were deeply saddened and shocked at the sudden passing on Monday of Tom Topping.
A major Ulster entrepreneur and very successful businessman, including the family’s Topping Meats company, Tom was regarded as a most kind man and a friend to everyone he knew.
The Larne local supported numerous local trainers and undoubtedly the ill-fated ‘Southsea Native’ was the best horse Tom owned – the horse winning on his bumper debut and appeared a likely Grade 1 performer – while ‘Yes Tom’, ‘Coastal Tiep’ and ‘Man With Van’ carried his colours in more recent seasons.
His business interests were many and varied from hotels to telecom companies, from farming to being a major force in the Northern Ireland beef industry and he was always open to discuss possibilities with youngsters with set up companies.
Tom not only owned racehorses, but was a regular sponsor of point to points and on the course proper, while endorsing other sporting activities.
The most amiable person to meet on a day out, he will be greatly missed by his very many friends.
Tom was married to his late wife Rae and is survived by children Kenneth, Louise and Alan. Condolences are offered to the large family circle on their loss.
The house is strictly private, however a service of thanksgiving for Tom’s life will be held in his house on Saturday, August 13 at 2.30pm and afterwards to the Glynn Cemetery.
