SATURDAY, September 11 saw the half way point of Hagans Croft’s five-week Show Jumping league and competitors had the pleasure of jumping a technical course of coloured fences. With a great number of clear rounds, cheeky refusals and some unfortunate ‘sat nav’ issues, spectators were in for an eventful day of jumping!
This league is catering for all capabilities, with the day starting off with cross-poles, gradually moving upwards to 1.10m classes. It was great to see the smaller competitors turn out to jump the cross-poles class, even if some competitors had to have assistance – the fun and smiles on their faces were sure to be seen. Everyone in this class went home with beautiful rosettes for their efforts.
In the 50cm class, it proved a little bit more difficult to achieve a clear round, with a few unfortunate poles down, ‘sat nav’ issues and a couple of dismounts. Nevertheless, each competitor tackled the course with determination and six competitors finished on a double clear.
Even though Charlie Watson’s week started off badly, with her beloved pony ‘Master Casper Boy’ sustaining an unfortunate injury, which means he is now out of the competition, Charlie had a quick change of mount taking on the 50cm class on her brother Zach’s pony called ‘Socks’…
Pardon the pun, but the pair certainly jumped their ‘socks’ off, as they jumped the course clear, taking all the turns in sight finishing in a super time well ahead of the other competitors in the class – 29.76 seconds, very deserving of the red ribbon. The second fastest time came from Henry McCarthy and his 25 years young pony ‘Casper’, who jumped into second place, taking home the blue ribbon.
Eva Wright and ‘Cappa Rose’ were back on top within the 60cm class, finishing clear in a time of 28.5 seconds they were delighted to win back their red ribbon. Emma Williamson and ‘Lislaird Nancy’ were hot on Eva and ‘Cappa Roses’ heels, as they too were clear, in a time of 28.78 seconds – only 0.28 of a second between them, meaning Emma came home with second place for their efforts.
The largest class on the day was the 70cm class, where the competition started to hot up. With a total of 20 competitors entered, nine of whom finished on a double clear through fences one to 12, it was down to who did it in the fastest time. In a time of 26.21 seconds, Jack Cowan and ‘Edentrillick Honey Bee’ couldn’t be caught and ran away with the red rosette. Una Megoran and ‘Misty’ were certainly up for the challenge, slipping into second place in a time of 27.33 seconds.
It was turning out to be a great day for Una and ‘Misty’, with another double clear in the 80cm, beating their previous speed time and setting the bar of the time to beat at 26.27 seconds. No one could touch their time, therefore, the pair were duly awarded first place and the red ribbon for this class. Sophie Lynn and ‘Ollie Bang’ were delighted to be back on top this week, coming home with second place and the blue ribbon for the 80cm class.
Sarah Cowan gave a polished performance in the 90cm class on her lovely grey mare ‘Pandora D’. With a double clear in a time of 32.75 seconds, the pair won the 90cm class, followed by Emma Brown and ‘Elly Bouncer’ in second place. Sarah and ‘Pandora D’ also went on to win the 1m class. What a great start to the weekend for this pair – well done!
Thank you to everyone who supported the third leg of this five-week league. Hagans Croft hopes to see everyone again next week. Thanks are extended to the judge Katy Saunders and to all the stewards, who make the event run so smoothly. The league continues until Saturday, September 25; this event is pre-entry only, with entries closing each Thursday at 8pm prior to Saturday’s event. Times are posted online late on Thursday evening.
To qualify for the final in week five, each horse/ pony and rider combination must compete in three out of the five weeks and within the same show jumping class. Competitors must be present at the final to be eligible for league placings. Scoring is based on a points system and details of league scores can be found on Hagans Croft’s website or facebook page. Rosettes are awarded to the first six placings each week and within the overall league placings. Everyone is welcome to compete at the final on September 25, with a separate prize giving held for those competing on the day and those competing within the league.
