SATURDAY, September 17 saw the final week of Hagans Croft Equestrian’s Show jumping Summer Blow Out event. It was fantastic to see so many budding young show jumpers in the cross-poles class, with fantastic ponies, all of whom received a rosette and a tub of popcorn for all their efforts and to encourage them along in their show jumping career.
It was a winning day for Rachel Price and ‘Sporty’, who not only claimed the top spot in the 50cm class, but also in the 60cm class. The pair also achieved the fastest time through fences nine to 12 across the whole day – the pair took the turns, attaining 26.59 seconds on the clock! Well done!
It was then on to the 70cm Accumulator class, where each fence was awarded points and, if each competitor cleared the fence in question, points were added, however if the fence was refused or pole knocked down, then points were deducted off the maximum 90 points for the class. As the course was jumped, competitors needed to figure out whether they should play it safe and jump the last fence (number 12) or take a risk to try and gain the maximum number of points (24 points) for jumping the joker fence. The joker fence was a rustic skinny brush fence, which was built 15cm higher than the course height, so in the case of the 70cm class, the joker fence was built to 85cm.
Some competitors took the risk and it paid off – one of those competitors who scored a perfect score of 90 points in a super fast time, Lauren Madine and ‘Muckrim Linda’, claimed a very well deserved first place. Anna Reid and ‘Commander’ tactically assessed the course and figured out that in some cases it is better to play it safe and jumped fence 12 successfully, receiving a total of 78 points, earning them second place on the day!
The next class on the schedule was the 80cm Accumulator with joker fence, the same rules apply although this time the joker fence was built to 95cm. Daisy Gillespie and ‘Reuben’ decided to take on the challenge of the joker fence and their risk paid off. The pair received a perfect score of 90 points and, with no-one else in the class receiving this top score, there was no denying Daisy and ‘Reuben’ the red rosette! Nicole Galbraith jumped the course clear all the way, although played it safe and jumped fence 12 instead of the joker fence, so it was a total of 78 points for the pair and they claimed second place.
Normal service resumed for the 90cm class, where the joker fence was removed and the course was fences one to 12, with fences nine to 12 against the clock. This time it was the red rosette for Nicole Galbraith and ‘Reuben’ with a clear scoreboard and a fast time of 29.87 seconds. It was second place for Emma Cochrane and ‘Elly Bouncer’, who also went on to win the 1m class! It was great to see this pair in action!
