Hi, my name is Joseph Kennedy, from Downpat-rick, County Down, and I’m a second year student on the Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Equine Management at CAFRE Enniskillen Campus.
After I finished my GCSEs I decided to follow my passion for horses and study at CAFRE with the plan of working in the equine industry. I grew up on my family’s flat racing Thoroughbred stud but I wanted to learn about other disciplines before returning to the family business.
Initially I completed Level 2 in Horse Care, in which I was awarded the Equestrian and Farm Feeds Cup for making the most progress in the academic year. I then progressed onto the Level 3 Advanced Technical Extended Diploma in Equine Management.
As part of this programme I undertook a five week work placement in Riverhill Stud, Crossgar, County Down. This
placement gave me the opp-ortunity to put my practical skills to good use and I was also able to continue learning on the job.
I am enjoying my time at CAFRE and have made many new and hopefully lifelong friends. CAFRE is a friendly and inviting place to learn and the staff are approachable and knowledgeable. I am enjoying the range of units we undertake and I am particularly enjoying the Equine Stud module.
As well as the studying aspect, the socialising is good. We are a close knit community at the campus and it’s great that we get the chance to meet people from other year groups and socialise together.
Our Student Recreational Com-mittee is currently organising the annual Christmas Formal, and our theme this year is Winter Wonderland.
We are looking forward to the formal and getting into the Christmas spirit.
