Working Hunter Series kicks off at Ardnacashel

Ardnacashel WH BR Farm
RUNNER UP: Anya Teuton on ‘Lisrua Star’ came second in the 80cm Large Breed M&M class at Ardnacashel. (FW06-553NN)

THE little red tractor at Ardnacashel had been working very, very hard in the days leading up to Sunday’s Working Hunter Series. This show was the first of three in the series, which has been kindly sponsored by Nash’s of Six Road Ends with the next show to be held on March 3.

The classes were split into two categories, horses in the morning and ponies following on in the afternoon after a lunch break for the judges. Both horses and ponies were in fine fresh form on what was a bright and crisp morning. The course was designed and built by the experienced team at Ardnacashel, so competitors were able to take advantage of a flowing and straight forward course, which had a mix of bullfinch fences, inviting roll tops and traditional rustic fences.

80CM AMATEUR: Anthea Steele won the 80cm Amateur class at Ardnacashel. (FW06-552NN)

The Horse section started at 10am with the 70cm performance horse class, which was won by Adele Huddleson, followed by the 80cm Amateur class, which was won by Anthea Steele on ‘Braveheart’. The ever-popular 80cm Northern Ireland Festival qualifier class was won by Heather Steele on her gorgeous horse ‘Otto’. Next up was the 85cm Small Horse Northern Ireland Festival qualifier, which proved fruitful for Emily McGowan on ‘Tullaree Fear Bui’ taking first place and Grainne Moore on ‘Hugo’ coming in second. It was a good day for Emily McGowan when, having won the previous class, she continued her winning spell and took the 90cm Northern Ireland Festival qualifier also, this time on ‘Silken Liberty’.

Another lady having a successful day at Ardnacashel’s Working Hunter series was Holly McClennaghan on ‘Blacklaw Polaris’, it was neck and neck between Holly and fellow competitor Nathan McCauseland on ‘Bowies Elevator’, with Holly winning the 1m Northern Ireland Festival qualifier class and Nathan taking second place; the results were reversed in the 110cm Northern Ireland Festival qualifier, where Nathan took top spot and Holly came in second.

Huge congratulations and thanks to all who competed and those who assisted the competitors to get show ready. Please be reminded that if you placed first to fourth place in a Northern Ireland Festival qualifying class, you have one week to register your qualification with the Northern Ireland Festival.

After a lunch break and a welcome and warming mug of coffee from Ella’s Kitchen, it was time to welcome the ponies into the main arena at Ardnacashel. The weather was on the turn, but it didn’t deter any of the competitors and arena stewards were busy keeping the arena moving and not leaving ponies or riders to stand for long. The first class was the cross-poles, which was won by Meghan Reid on ‘Twinkle Little Flower’ and second place went to Robyn Rick on ‘Apollo’. Meghan was in winning form, as she also won the 50cm class on ‘Twinkle Little Flower’!

The 60cm class, which also included the Cradle Stakes Northern Ireland Festival qualifier, went to Molly Marner on ‘Miss Money Penny’. Next in was the Small Breed M&M, which went to Lucy Donnan on ‘Harry’. The 70cm including Starter Stakes Northern Ireland Festival qualifier was won by Meghan Houston on ‘Rowan’, with Freya McClenaghan on her fantastic ‘Goblet of Fire’ in second place.

The course was heightened as the 80cm including Northern Ireland Festival 133cm qualifier got underway. First place went to Kelsey Dean on ‘Aine’ and, in the 80cm Large Breed M&M, it was Holly McClenaghan partnered by ‘Longwood Don’ who claimed the red ribbon, with second place awarded to Anya Teuton with her gorgeous ‘Lisrua Star’. Keeping the native breed flag flying, it was the turn of the mighty Connemara with the 90cm class dedicated to this phenomenal breed. The class went to Emily Hawe and ‘Crannard King of Hearts’, with Lyndsey Martin on ‘Shantiks Boys’ in second place.
The 90cm including Northern Ireland Festival 143cm qualifier was won by Meghan Houston, who was in fine competitive form with ‘Holidays Nicks Sensation’ and in second place was Ellie McDonnell on board ‘Sonny Bill Williams’. The final class of the day was the 1m to include 153cm Northern Ireland Festival qualifier and this went to Emily Hawe with the wonderful ‘Crannard King of Hearts’.

Once again, Ardnacashel would like to give congratulations and thanks to all who competed and those who assisted the pony competitors to get show ready. Please be reminded that if you placed first to fourth place in a Northern Ireland Festival qualifying class, you have one week to register your qualification with the Northern Ireland Festival.

Organisers hope to see everyone at the next show, on February 9 for the Services Show Jumping Series and on February 10 for the Spring Dressage Series, which is kindly sponsored by Cryotherapy Ireland and Drumhowan Stud.
